Essay Planning

How do we see breaches of Article 4 in the Novel Abomination?

"No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms'.
* can't be forced to work for others
* loss of freedom because you are held

Abomination/Jim
  • he is locked up in the basement.
  • he is held captive but not made to work
Quote: Abomination's a boy, Scott. A little boy. He lies in the cellar, in a cage. P. 143
" I heard this noise this sort of howling" P. 139.

Martha
  • she is held in her house & forced to work.
  • she has limited personal freedom
  • she isn't allowed to tell others what is going on
  • care for abomination - feed him, change him, stop him yelling.
  • she is being beaten
Quote: - not tell others - " Mother says we're special because we're righteous
 - Care for abomination"

Author included to give insight into what is happening in the house, makes us dislike the parents because they keep him in the cage.

Author includes so we feel sorry for Martha, and able to understand/forgive her for keeping Abomination in the basement.

Yes - he is now out of captivity but no because the parents aren't punished his other rights have been breached - eg right to education.

* yes - she isn't forced to be a slave to looking after Abomination she has more personal freedom.
* trauma
